South Korea's economy shot higher by the largest margin in seven years, according to the central bank, easily surpassing economists' forecasts.

Real gross domestic product grew by 2.9% in the third quarter compared with the previous quarter, with the biggest gains seen in the manufacturing and electricity, gas and water sectors, the Bank of Korea said Monday.

That was the fastest growth rate since 2002, when GDP gained 3.8% in the first quarter
