Brushmud - Compaq found some 800 MHz Coppermines !
"The ML530 is equipped with up to two 800MHz Pentium III Xeon chips. It has 4GB of 133MHz synchronous dynamic RAM and up to 218GB of internal storage.
The ML350 has up to two 600MHz or 733MHz Pentium III processors, while the ML 370 has up to two 667MHz or 733MHz Pentium IIIs. The ML350 provides hot-plug drives, a function not normally contained in a low-end server. "
Maybe that playing field will be contested after all - whaddya think ?

Compaq extends its server clan

Compaq Computer Corp. today welcomed a set of sextuplets to its server family and said another new model is on the way.
The renamed ProLiant DL line is thin so ISPs (Internet service providers) and ASPs (application service providers) can mount many of them in a single rack. Meanwhile, the new ProLiant ML models, focused for the enterprise, are designed to be expandable as computing needs grow.
For small businesses, two new NeoServer models will provide the basis for a network infrastructure and come with packaged services to get those customers up and running.
The new ProLiant DL380, a follow-on to the ProLiant 1850R, is about 5.25 inches high so service providers can mount more servers on a rack for higher server density. It is equipped with up to two 733MHz Intel Corp. Pentium III processors, each with 256KB of cache.
Other features of the DL380 include four PCI slots (three of which have a 64-bit architecture and one with a 32-bit architecture) and embedded RAID, supporting levels 0, 0+1, 1 and 5. Moreover, while the new addition to the ProLiant line supports dual channel Ultra 2 SCSI, it is backward compatible with Fast SCSI, Fast-Wide SCSI and Wide Ultra 3 SCSI devices.
Compaq also pre-announced an upcoming addition to the DL line code-named Photon. This server, due in the second quarter, will also come with two Pentium III processors and be only about 1.75 inches high.
"You will see the same density leadership in this server that you now see in the eight-way space," said Brad Anderson, Compaq's vice president for corporate small and medium business servers.
The Houston company also introduced three other ProLiant servers: the ML350, ML370 and the ML530 models. These servers are designed more for brick-and-mortar companies that are extending their businesses to the Internet.
The ML530 is equipped with up to two 800MHz Pentium III Xeon chips.
All three of the ML series models include some PCI slots with 64-bit architecture and a 133MHz front-side bus for faster transfers.
In addition, Compaq introduced a third subset of server models, the NeoServer 150 and the NeoServer 150 Internet Plus, both of which come equipped with a single Intel 500MHz Celeron processor. The Internet Plus version comes with a modem connection for Internet access.
Finally, Compaq announced CarePaq packaged services for the ProLiants and NeoServers. It will also bundle Insight Manager XE management software standard with ProLiant servers.
All of the servers except the Photon server are available now. Pricing for the DL380 begins at $4,886, while pricing for the ML 530 is $5,340, the ML350 is $2,272, and the ML370 starts at $3,400.
Pricing was not available for the NeoServers.
