I asked an Iranian guy I know (he owns the kebab shop I eat at frequently) about Ahmadinejad - is he mad, or stupid, or what? He said there was nothing unusual about Ahmadinejad's statements about Israel, this has been the standard rhetoric in Iran for many years, and according to him is nothing more than rhetoric, for domestic consumption. What was different now was the way these statements were given so much publicity in the world media. He agreed that it was stupid of Ahmadinejad to play into US hands like that. This guy, by the way, said he hates the government of Iran, but since the invasion of Iraq, threats against Iran etc he finds his Iranian patriotism has overcome his distaste for the current government. FWIW.
