I have no problem with symbolism used in the Revelation. I think that there is both and sometimes a single passage has several levels of meaning. I think it is important to differentiate where John is in the Spirit. For instance, a major dividing line in the book is when he is instructed to "come up hither". Those things that he sees in heavenly places do not have human words for him to describe. This was a problem faced by all of the prophets as well. There simply isn't a frame of reference for someone like Ezekiel to describe those heavenly creatures, etc. I think that we should try to use literal meanings unless it is apparent that they are symbolic. I hope this explains my position in regards to literal vs. symbolic meaning. I don't think you would argue that everything is symbolic in the book.
