60% Support Private Social Security Accounts

Blogs for Bush

So says this new Fox News poll brought to our attention by Patrick Ruffini.

In the poll, this question is asked:

<<<

Do you favor or oppose giving individuals the choice to invest a portion of their Social Security contributions in stocks or mutual funds?
>>>

The results for this are 60% overall approving, with 76% of those under 30 being in favor; for people over 55 the figure is 56% in favor. This result doesn't surprise me in the least; people want to have more control over their own personal affairs and as more and more people have become involved in stocks and bonds, the mysteries and fears surrounding them have evaporated.

Its also good to note the way the question was phrased; we've seen polls come out recently which purport to show low and declining support for privatisation, but from what I've seen of the questions asked, they were framed in a much more negative light...a sort of "do you favor President Bush's plan which may result in benefit cuts?" type question. People don't want their benefits cut (and the President has not advocated any such thing) but they do like the idea of personal control over their Social Security.

Democrats and assorted anti-freedom leftwingers are whistling past the electoral graveyard if they really think that (a) reform wont happen or (b) they'll gain traction by opposing reform.
