Telular Canada's wholly owned subsidiary, Global Data Granite
Communications, a leading innovator of integrated wireless automatic data
collection solutions, and PenRight! Corp., the leading provider of
pen-based operating environments and application development tools, today
announced that Global Data Granite Communications has licenced PenRight!'s
operating environment and rapid application development tools for their new
pen-based, touch screen, NOVAS hand-held computer.
Global Data Granite Communications will have the ability to market,
distribute, and resell PenRight!'s market leading pen-based operating
environment and application development tools for the new NOVAS hand-held
computer.
By using PenRight!'s development tools and pen-based operating environment,
Global Data Granite Communications gains instant access to thousands of
vertical hand-held applications. This, combined with the capability to
quickly create powerful new pen-based handheld applications, will allow
NOVAS to quickly penetrate the market.
The NOVAS' software and hardware architecture is based on industry standard
specifications allowing existing PenRight! applications to be directly
ported to the unit with minimum configuration requirements.
Over 1,200 leading VARs, system integrators and corporate developers have
used PenRight!'s development environment to create applications for a
variety of industries such as route accounting, transportation, healthcare,
retail, inventory management, public safety, utilities, pharmaceutical, and
many other mobile data collection fields.
PenRight!'s cross platform application development environment for
pen-based computing solutions focuses on the unique requirements of
creating powerful solution for the mobile worker. Optimized for the mobile
market, PenRight! based applications run faster, require less memory and
realize longer battery life than any other pen-based visual development
tools.
NOVAS employs extremely user friendly touchscreen technology, signature
capture, and industry standard DOS in a proven, rugged ergonomic design.
The NOVAS is ideal for companies who require a powerful, highly flexible
data collection and communications device that is designed to excel in the
harsh, demanding environments of today's mobile workforce. Withstanding ten
4 foot drops to concrete and temperatures to -4 degrees F, this extremely
tough product is a lightweight at just over a pound. With advanced features
such as auto-sensing backlit touchscreen display, signature capture, IrDA
data port, and an internal Type II PCMCIA slot, ease of data collection is
greatly improved. An optional integrated 1-D or 2-D bar code scanner reads
all standard bar code symbologies and the on-screen activation trigger is
software controlled for operation with either hand. Wireless LAN
communications via a PC card supports direct sequence or frequency hopping
spread spectrum RF. Short range RF provides wireless communications to a
printer or magnetic strip reader.
Beta units will be available for evaluation and application development
October 1998. Production units will begin shipping the first of next year.
Headquartered in Fremont, California, PenRight! Corp. designs and markets
both the PenRight! operating environment and the PenRight! development
tools. PenRight! is a graphical user interface and handwriting recognition
environment tuned for mobile data collection applications. The PenRight!
application development environment includes object oriented design tools,
