Intel has had serious production problems transitioning to 0.4 micron
technology in their Flash memory production lines. They have put
their Flash customers "on allocation". That means they have taken
orders that they already booked, and they have told customers that
only a fraction of those orders will be delivered. In a time when
there is excess Flash capacity in the industry from the likes of
AMD and Fujitsu, Intel stands to lose further market share. In AMD's
conference call last week, one of the officers affirmed that AMD was
"not capacity constrained" in its Flash product lines. Looks like
a major mistake for Intel and an oppportunity for AMD and Fujitsu.
