The ability to roam internationally is overhyped. The majority of world cannot afford trips to foreign lands unless associated with business. Ask yourself, what percentage of Americans take trips to Europe for business or pleasure. Very small percentage. Those that do could probably well afford a rental phone or one of those pre-paid phones (if they need or want a phone at all).

The majority of American's who do take vacations do so within the US, Canada, and Mexico. All of which are covered by CDMA.

International roaming rates are so high because there isn't a huge demand for it.
