You need to separate the NC and Java. The NC was never anything more than hype. X Terminals did the same thing better 10 years ago. PCs in one flavor or another just do a cheaper and more flexible job on virtually any desktop requirement. The few people who started down the NC road in any big way (FedEX, CTX) switched to PC clients in midstream, and the few vendors still making a show about NCs (IBM and SUNW) are just going through the motions. By next year the NC will be another curiosity of computer history.

Java is a different story. The biggest problem with Java is that SUNW wants to use it as a weapon against MSFT. Java is more than a language, less than an environment, but it has the kind of underlying appeal and potential that could make it a major force eventually. This will only happen when Sun is no longer significantly involved in the direction of Java, since they seem intent on hurting the areas where it has the most potential (such as in Microsoft-based large systems) to keep MSFT from getting any advantage.
