It sounds like the prisoners need better attorneys. The real issue with confessions gained under torture is at a certain point a person will admit to anything in the hope the torture will stop if they do.

Aside from the fact it goes against every principal this country was founded on, not to mention principals established by every civilized nation in the free world, information obtained under torture isn't reliable in the first place
