The polls indicate the opposite is true. Given the present situation Gore would be a total flop. Bush has a better chance of limping out of this. His wounds will help him keep the right wing element of the republican party in check. Bush with substantial majorities in the House and Senate and a solid victory would have been a problem. Bush pushed closer to the center is the best solution.

Gore has proven himself to the left of Clinton.
