Speaking of shifts in local business practices and advertizing, I came across this site:

Here's the deal-- the company finds out about total kitchen tearouts, signs the family on and gives them a tax break for charitable contribution, and people with good taste and not-so-big pocketbooks can buy the kitchen (countertops, cabinetry, and appliances) for about half price.

In Fairfield County,CT., land of the hedge fund managers, there's still crazy amounts of money for luxury kitchen "updates" every couple of years. The eastern part of the state is hurting rather badly. It's like two different countries.
