SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--The Economic Development Board, a government body that attracts foreign investment to Singapore, confirmed Tuesday it will take a 15% equity stake in Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp.'s (UMC) Singapore plant.

The 300-millimeter wafer foundry will cost US$3.6 billion to build, and includes Infineon Technologies (IFX) as a shareholder.

Groundbreaking for the wafer plant, located in Singapore's Pasir Ris Wafer Fab Park, is scheduled for later this quarter. Initial equipment move-in is expected in the third quarter of 2002, the EDB and UMC said in a joint statement.

United Microelectronics is a semiconductor foundry, while Infineon offers semiconductor systems for applications in the wireless and wired communications markets.

The EDB will take the stake via its EDB Investment Pte. Ltd.

In December, the two sides said they were in talks, but didn't confirm whether a deal was struck.
