RE: "Now we have HWP, IBM and DELL saying that Taiwan parts shortages will materially impact sales, but, Intel managers very carefully word their response to the same question as 'we'll meet all our orders.'"
Ron, I listened to the CC and they said they were not impacted by the Quake. Intel speaks about their business - they are not industry spokespersons for HWP, IBM, and Dell. Also, Intel makes chips, not computers.
RE: "They also say that Y2K will not impact Intel operations. That needs some clarification"
I listened to the CC and it was very clear to me. Specifically, they said Y2k is alive and well, with some buyers delaying purchases, some buyers increasing purchases, but the net Y2k impact is a wash (i.e. X - X = 0 ) on Q4 as they currently see it.
RE: "Intel management worded it to imply that Y2K-induced order deferrals will not impact Intel sales but it will. I think Intel officers have lost a lot of credibility this year with their word-smithing approach to informing investors"
If your comment pertains to Intel's Qtr CC, then it is incorrect because I heard the call and they said it will not impact sales overall. They DID say some will buy more (X) and some will buy less (X). X-X=0 impact on sales. Net Impact is Zero per their discussion in the CC:
Message 11527549 "- Both stories of Y2K are alive and well from our customers [i.e. those who buy now vs. those who buy later], therefore we're seeing normal growth"
