Of course I look at military service as something people go do when they have to, I've never been able to get the idea of 'career military.'

I was married for ten years to a regular Air Force officer (and I worked at the Pentagon for about five years). Even as a spouse I chafed at the life. I wouldn't last five minutes in the military since don't "do" hierarchy. But it can be a good life if you're in the right career field and the right location, rather like the civil service only with uniforms and its own subdivision of extended family. In its way, it's safe and secure and you get to engage with a lot of decent people, kind of Norman Rockwell. At least it used to be.
