Mark, I agree: it's a bad idea!

In my opinion GVIL is a second-rate has-been. I can't imagine what technology they possess that would make AAPL even want to consider a merger. Back in '93 I'd heard how great their modems were and bought a couple of Golds for my Macs. It was not a good experience. I can't remember the exact details, but the modems came with a driver / control application that drove me nuts. The darn thing used to start up and hog the serial port for no apparent reason. I couldn't get it to behave so I finally junked it and used Apple's generic modem driver; fortunately, the modems worked okay. Today, I'm much happier with a USR, and as for the Golds, I still use one for the e-mail server. I am never buying a GVIL modem again, no matter how cool it looks.
