We were talking about Holbrooke yesterday and how impressive he was. Someone I know in the field tells me that Holbrooke is supersmart, superexperienced, superambitious, and superegotistical. He is an outsized person in every way. Holbrooke desperately wants to be Secretary of State, and would almost certainly have gotten it under Gore. As for how he would have done, probably rather well, but it's a bit hard to say. He's incredibly talented, but he's also very brash and aggressive and devious.
