You've got the wrong metaphor, IMO. It's more like a pendulum--it swings one way, goes a little too far, swings back the other way, goes a little less too far, until it settles at an equilibrium. This is not a slippery slope, er, beach. There is just way, way too much sand and the waves are tiny. Anyone who tries to build a seawall for two inch waves just looks silly.
