My wife observes very different behavior from her kids at times. In a "one on one" with her in class they are often much more calm and constrained in their actions, but given an audience of peers they go off the deep end into silly antics and sometimes mean and bizarre acting out. I have guessed it is a quest for attention that is sorely lacking at home or simply a copycat reaction.

I guess this would fit with your theory.
