Re: I have been wondering about the relationship between the lowest Pricewatch quote and AMD's wholesale price...

I took a quick look and checked the first listing for a 550. They are selling the chip for $187 - for online orders only. There are several shipping options, starting with UPS ground (takes a week or so) for $39, next is Fedex standard (2-day)at $79.

store.ccraft.net

Of that $39 UPS charge, my guess would be that UPS sees about $2.25 of it.

So the reality is that particular outfit was selling them for $220+

Of the other listings, the cheapest with S&H was around $210. I think margins are pretty slim in that area, but I doubt that they're paying more than $175 or so.

There are always discounts, for terms, meeting certain volume levels, regular ordering schedules, "specials", etc. I'd hazard a guess that the total discount seen here is close to 20% off the published price list. And I'd also guess that such a discount isn't unusual.

Regards,

Dan
