There is a third choice and this happened last year. The Fed did not raise. Instead of the market reacting favorably, it immediately started worrying about the next fed meeting and sold off.

Could margin also have something to do with this big sell off? I have read that a lot of margin calls are going out.

I would rather have one huge sell off and get it over with. This is a killer. About the time you think you have a bottom, it sinks more.

I have also heard that a lot of people are pulling their money out because of Y2K. I don't think Y2K is going to be a problem but the perception may be a problem. I receive a newsletter that said to have your money out by June 1.
