OT: Very sorry to read of your situation. I've been in the same boat twice before. On the one hand, I'm glad to be out of depressing situations in struggling companies, and I have been able to go on to different opportunities. On the other hand, I'm still, years later, angry that my work and career were hurt by incompetent executives and events beyond my control.

In layoff situations there are stages that people go through. Knowing that there are stages helps a person to know what to expect and that the person is not alone in what he/she is experiencing on this road. And that there is something positive at the end of that road.

If your company provides a good outplacement service this service should explain what can be expected emotionally and psychologically - and not avoid this uncomfortable aspect to just do the easier thing of instructing people on how to write a resume or seek job leads or present oneself in an interview.

If you do not have access to professionals, imho, you will do well to read any of William Bridges' work on transitions. He's perhaps the acknowledged expert in the field who's studied job transitions.
