A couple of interesting entries on the NANOG List this morning.
The thread is titled DNS and Root Servers. -----------
  One gent writes:
Has anybody noticed any problems this morning with some of the root name servers? (Particularly a.root-servers.net?)
  And a reply:
  John,
We too have seen some weird stuff this morning (and last night). It seems we're getting bad info regarding certain domain entries that's redirecting to morehits.com. Is that what you're seeing?
So, remembering what you said the other day about fluky hit counts, I went to morehits.com . See for yourself. Give it a look and let me know what you make of it.
And in the periphery of my thinking, and this is only hypothetical, mostly musing on my part, at this point, I am also wondering what kinds of secondary effects involving directory services are being caused by all of the redirecting we've been discussing here. Since, sometimes proxies and bona fide "other" reflectors are already in use in some SPs' networks, and who knows what all else becomes a factor in non-standard routing considerations - when entrepreneurial types begin to use the tools of the Internet in ways that are not in harmony with its evolving protocols, and in some cases, its very precepts. And when you begin to introduce multicasting into disparate ISP distribution networks? I'll let you, and David Horne, along with any others who care to comment, to take a hand at that one.
Again, this is only some hypothetical reflection on my part, intended to provide food for thought. But these things do enter my mind, at times. Comments welcome, as always.
  Regards, Frank Coluccio
