All I can think of is that book value simply represents liquidation value of a company at a certain point in time, it doesn't reflect the amount one would receive as a shareholder. Also, you have to sift through the book value and see what the assets are that are being valued and how they're being valued.

However, you would look at the fact that the book value is fifty percent higher than the trading range now and think, how much lower can they go. This is definitely a high risk/high reward stock. But, it's the type that you should be using you're play money in. Not the down payment on your next home!
