Larry, read post #66. Paracelsian has an option to acquire East West Herbs, a leading international distributor of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This strategy makes a lot of sense--It fits in nicely with their plans to market AndroVir and AndroCar.
I'm going to quote a few paragraphs from an April 22 Business wire. I hope this doesn't break copyright law. I wouldn't do this if it were current news, but since it is old news I doubt anyone will care.
"East West Herbs Ltd. is believed to be the market leader in the marketing and distribution of Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) in the U.K. and throughout Europe. . . . (Paracelsian's President Keith) Rhodes stated in making the announcement: 'East West Herbs Ltd. will provide Paracelsian with the expertise and infrastructure necessary for distribution of Paracelsian herbal products.' Rhodes indicated that this agreement is a significant step in the company's marketing and distribution plan. Rhodes further noted that East West Herbs customers represent a ready market for certain Paracelsian products targeted for sales under the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act. . . .
Founded in 1986 East West Herbs Ltd. has established a major position in the United Kingdom's TCM field, and acts as an advisor to both pharmaceutical firms and government agencies concerned with the regulation of TCM in the U.K. It is estimated that the current TCM market for Europe and the USA is approximately $200 million. East West Herbs markets directly and through distributors to practionioners of TCM in the U.K., Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Israel, South Africa, Austrailia, Canada and the U.S. East West Herbs opened a sales and marketing office in Emeryville, Calif. in October 1995 to sell directly to the large number of healthcare providers using TCM in their clinical practices on the West Coast.
In 1994, East West Herbs LTD signed an exclusive 10-year agreement with Giovanni Maciocia, an internationally recognized expert in Oriental Medicine, in which East West Herbs acquired the world-wide rights to a range of 36 herbal remedies formulated by Maciocia, marketed as "The Three Treasures." The Three Treasures line was introduced in June 1995 and has already produced significant revenues.
... East West Herbs Ltd. reported revenue for the 11 months ending Feb 29, 1996 in excess of $1.5 million. The company is presently experiencing a growth rate of in excess of 15% annually with the "Three Treasures" contributing significantly to the company's growth."
In an Oct 10, 1996 story it was reported that East West Herbs has "two products in Phase I clinical studies for the treatment of side-effects caused by cytotoxic drugs used in chemotherapy. The clinical trials are presently supervised by Dr. Adrian Harris and his staff at the University of Oxford's ICRF Clinical Oncology Unit, Churchill Hospital."
