Earlier this week on PBS there was an interview with one of the NIH doctors who was running the Alzheimer's/Naprosyn/Celebrex clinical trial. He said just because they stopped the trial there's no reason to stop taking Naprosyn or Celebrex.

There is, at present, no known benefit for preventing Alzheimer's by using Naprosyn or Celebrex, so it was unethical to subject normal test subjects to any risk.

All known medications have both risk and benefit. Balancing those two requires both knowledge of the individual's personal health, and medical knowledge in general. In other words, you need to get together with your own doctor and decide whether you need to keep taking something.

As an example, we're discussing on this thread switching from COX-2 inhibitors to NSAIDS, swapping a potential risk of cardiovascular incidents for a known risk of gastric bleeding. Good idea or not?

Depends on the individual.

But I know that lawyers will be blamed no matter what is decided. It's easy to point the finger at the dreaded trial lawyers. They're used to it. Will take some of the heat off the ACLU. ;^)

PS - this interview is one of the many reasons I prefer PBS to Rush. Rush or Sean would never interview an NIH doctor to ask why they stopped a clinical trial and what that means for the rest of us. They already know everything.
