KUMARANASAN (1873-1924)- Poet extraordinaire

Kumaranasan (1873- 1924) Indian poet and socio-political activist scripted socio-aesthetic philosophy of a secular life-frame. He led an intellectual rebellion against the theocratic socio-political structure while a secular India was in the making. He draws issues of social justice from social memory and tradition against the background of mysticism and casteism. The depth of dialectics in his poetry is great.

Man is the supreme poetic word, he declares; being human is more poetic than being divine.

The cerebral fertility of Kerala's great cultural tradition strikes roots in the ancient Dravidian thought and dream. Inner contradictions in the great Indian tradition disturbed Asan's poetic activity from the very beginning. The contradiction between the Upanishad school of learning and Vedic temple of prayer is an intellectual expression of the racial or class contradiction in ancient Indian humanity.
