They put the salt on the ice and then plow the snow later. The salt the township uses doesn't hurt the grass, hell, the ditches grow faster than the yards.

What does happen in the spring is the get my gravel back. Several of my neighbors have gravel drives up to 400' long. When their drives are plowed a lot of gravel winds up in the neighbor across the road's lawn.

The township is testing a liquid that keeps snow and ice from sticking to pavement. It's made from corn and is biodegradable.
