Number Nine's SR9 Chosen to Preview Emerging Technology At Intel Developers Forum
SR9 First with DVI-I Support - Single Connector Drives Digital or Analog Monitor
LEXINGTON, Mass., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Number Nine Visual Technology Corp. (Nasdaq: NINE - news), a leader in high-performance PC graphics and digital visual technology, today announced that its SR9 Graphics Accelerator, equipped to conform to the emerging Digital Video Interface (DVI) specification, was selected by Intel as the preferred graphics platform at this weeks Intel Developers Forum (IDF). More than 75 SR9 graphics accelerators, each capable of outputting a digitally-pure video signal, will be highlighted to conference attendees as the graphics technology used to power the latest digital displays.

Thousands of industry leading software and hardware developers will converge upon Palm Springs, California for the week-long event. While there, developers will receive technical training at the Intel Labs, using the latest computer technology. Several high-tech, hands-on training centers will be outfitted with Number Nine's DVI-enabled SR9 graphics accelerators -- each connected to state-of-the-art digital displays. Developers will experience the advantages of working on an all-digital display system, most for the very first time. Digitally-equipped SR9 adapters will also be highlighted in Intel's Technology Showcase Pavilion, used in Intel's Analog-Free Zone Concept House of the Future, throughout the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG) booth, in Silicon Image's booth and in ViewSonic's booths in the Demo Showcase.

''Every major computer sub-system is digital, except for the monitor, and this is beginning to change rapidly,'' says Wallace Smith, Chief Executive Officer for Number Nine. ''Both monitor and computer manufacturers are asking for leading-edge, digital graphics solutions, and we're delivering products that are going to help them transition to an all-digital visual environment.''

Until recently, multiple digital interface specifications and connectors existed between graphics cards and monitors, not to mention the legacy analog VGA connector. To eliminate consumer confusion and to create a single common display interface, the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG), a group headed by Intel, Compaq, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard, IBM, NEC and Silicon Image was established with the chartered goal of defining a single, common display interface standard called the Digital Visual Interface specification. The adopted DVI standard created a display interface that supports both conventional analog monitors and the new breed of digitally-powered monitors.

The move to digitally powered display technology is spreading beyond the typical LCD markets. Recently, a large number of monitor manufacturers have seen the advantages adding support for digital technology on their traditional line of glass or CRT monitors. A common complaint among monitor manufacturers is that many graphics accelerator cards produce an inferior analog video signal. With digital-equipped graphics adapters, a digitally-pure video signal is sent to the monitor and displayed accurately as it was intended.

First with Integrated DVI-I Support

In May, 1999, Number Nine announced that its SR9 was the first graphics accelerator to demonstrate support for the DVI specification. With flexibility a key feature, the SR9 was designed to accept a snap-on, DVI-D (digital-only) connector module that was mounted just below that standard VGA connector (analog). This meant that the SR9 could support traditional analog displays or digital displays. Continuing to lead the digital revolution with its innovative engineering, Number Nine today announced that it has now delivered the world's first DVI-I enabled graphics accelerator. The integrated DVI-I connector supports either digital or analog monitors from a single connector, thus eliminating the need for two separate connectors.

The SR9 delivers state-of-the-art 2D, 3D and DVD features at an unbeatable price point. Number Nine's 128-bit SR9 accelerator is compatible with both AGP 2X and AGP 4X systems and is offered in 8-, 16- and 32-megabyte configurations. The board supports on-the-fly 3D-texture de-compression, 32-bit true-color 3D rendering and support for massive 3D textures as large as 2,048 x 2,048 pixels. These advanced features will allow users to view 3D graphics that are significantly more realistic and life-like.
