SDL Announces New High-Speed Integrated Modulator/Attenuator Incorporates Dual Functionality in a Single Module at 10 Gb/s Data Rates SAN JOSE, Calif., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- SDL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDLI) expands its offering of integrated optical modules with the 9189 Series integrated modulator/attenuator for use in fiber optic transmission networks operating at OC-192 data rates of 10 Gb/s. The innovative 9189 Series combines the functions of optical modulation and attenuation in a single fiber coupled module. Optical modulators are used in SDH, SONET and DWDM fiber optic transmission networks to encode data on the transmitted optical signal. Attenuators are required to set the transmitted optical power to the appropriate level for a specific network configuration. The 9189 Series combines both functions by utilizing SDL's advanced integrated waveguide technology and high reliability optoelectronic packaging capability.
The 9189 Modulator/Attenuator is designed to meet the growing demand for high performance components at 10 Gb/s data rates in long haul fiber optic networks. The 9189 Series accommodates a wide range of transmission wavelengths allowing a single product to be used at any wavelength in the L- or C-Band range of erbium doped fiber amplifiers. The 9189 integrated module also features continuously tunable attenuation to accommodate variable network configuration requirements. Both functions are achieved in a single lithium niobate chip with two separately addressable waveguide sections packaged in a hermetic module with fiber input and output. The fiber coupled module has been tested according to the rigorous reliability requirements of Bellcore GR-468-CORE. Evaluation units are available now with volume shipments scheduled to begin in late Q1 2000. According to Michael Murphy, Product Marketing Manager for SDL Integrated Optics, "The 9189 highlights the value of optoelectronic integration. By combining multiple functions on a single chip, overall performance is increased while total cost is reduced. With this product we've successfully leveraged our experience in lithium niobate waveguide design to meet both modulation and attenuation functional requirements at 10 Gb/s data rates over a wide range of signal wavelengths."
SDL's products power the transmission of data, voice and Internet information over fiber optic networks to meet the needs of telecommunications, dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), cable television and satellite communications applications. They enable customers to meet the bandwidth needs of increasing Internet, data, video and voice traffic by expanding their fiber optic communications networks much more quickly and efficiently than would be possible using conventional electronic and optical technologies. SDL's optical products also serve a variety of non-communications applications, including materials processing and printing.
