Novell joins cable forum
By Margaret Kane

Hoping to expand its networking solutions into the home, Novell Inc. has joined with a consortium of cable companies to develop new technologies.

Novell, of Orem, Utah, will be part of the CableLabs Technology Convergence Forum, designed to bring together cable and IT companies.

"The reason for joining the forum is so we can be working with a lot of other vendors and understand what's going on in that space," said Tom Jones, strategic markets director at Novell.
"The market for doing networking to the home and in the home is certainly a very large market, and we'd like to participate in it."

CableLabs is a consortium of cable companies based in Denver, Colo.

Jones said Novell would consider developing its own products or licensing technologies to other companies, as the company has done with its Novell Embedded Systems Technology.

He said there may be some parallels between the way NEST works and cable networking.

"We may not take exactly the same code and run it in over here, but we are looking at the space and saying, 'What core technology do we have that we can develop here?' " he said.
