Al,
Think of the converse....do you want to follow an irrational thought process and assign indiscriminate, random acts of death and pain to "God" while ignoring a more obvious and logical explanation? Isn't that unfair to "God"?
The problem in that statement is you're assuming "random chance" is the "more obvious and logical explanation."

There is nothing logical about random chance. Far from it. Random chance actually defies logic and boils everything down to a roll of the dice. Even Einstein didn't like the notion that God plays dice.
Furthermore, since, as I believe, a good God is a human creation, it follows that morality and compassion are also general human traits which become more acute as our ability to think critically evolves...
I still don't see the "critical thinking" involved here. If you'd rather dismiss these miraculous events as "random chance," that's your choice based on your belief that God is a human creation.

But to dismiss those who believe otherwise as unable to "critically think" is to be rather patronizing. Because I can't think of a more human response than to ascribe such fortunate events to a higher purpose or a higher calling.

Nor can I think of a more calloused response than to just say, "Oh yeah, I'm here because of dumb luck. Your children died because of dumb luck. Everything is just the result of dumb luck. Feel better now?"
