The CPU fan on my computer stopped working after 5+ years, and AMD quad CPU was running for some time without it. I have a huge Artic cooler on it and the case fan also sucks a bit of air through it also. The CPU still works but something has gone on either CPU or the MB as things don't run as well as they used to. I did run diagnosis reports of various sorts but nothing showed up. The CPU socket is old AM2+ and my RAM is DDR2, I also had a spare new replacement MB waiting. Rather then upgrade everything I went to this site.

cpu-upgrade.com

and found that once I didn't pick an modern FX series 6 core CPU, and went for the older type

1045T, 2.7 GHz, Rev. E0, 95W, Socket AM3, 6-Core, HDT45TWFK6DGR1804

Couldn't get a new one, obsolete these days, and I am not going to pay top dollar from some specialist, I got a 1045T 6 core CPU (95 watts) second hand from a ebay dealer with a good customer service score. It is the max possible upgrade I can get for this MB with socket AM2+ and using this socket , the CPU is really socket AM3... it can still use the DDR2 which I got loads of very cheap indeed.

Replaced the fan, but still using the same cooler. I think its excellent. Originally I was going to use water cooling, but I think its gas pipe system is as good as water cooling, inexpensive and very quiet.
