Interesting consequences for SFA choosing VisionTech over CUBE for their MPEG-2 chips.

Good luck,
Eric

VisionTech To Provide Key Technology For Scientific-Atlanta To Integrate Personal Video Recording In Digital Set-Tops

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2000 3:09:00 AM EST

HERZLYIA, Israel, Aug 30, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- VisionTech today announced an agreement with Scientific-Atlanta SFA to supply an integrated circuit, VisionTech's Kfir dual-channel MPEG-2 video/audio encoder, expected to help enable personal video recording capabilities on Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer(R) advanced digital set-tops.

Personal video recording gives viewers greater control over their TV viewing experience, enabling them to freeze a "live" TV program, instantly replay or rewind a program being watched, and skip ahead in a recorded program to their favorite movie scene or the next big play of a sporting event. With the feature, viewers can quickly find programs to watch and record with the touch of a remote control button. Personal video recording technology can even monitor the viewer's program preferences and record similar shows they might want to see at a later time.

"Personal video recording appears very popular with TV viewers, and we believe the technology could be even more compelling when integrated with the superior capabilities of broadband cable digital set-tops versus today's stand-alone devices," said Michael P. Harney, corporate vice president and general manager of Scientific-Atlanta's Subscriber Networks.

"VisionTech's Kfir dual-channel MPEG-2 video/audio encoder integrated circuit will be a significant milestone in the evolution of the personal video recorder set-top box market," says Amir Morad, president and CEO of VisionTech. "With improved performance, new feature additions and component integration, the Kfir technology clearly will provide the cable industry with a level of integration and performance that is unparalleled. Our ability to successfully combine core technologies together into one chip will make it economically feasible for the wide-scale deployment of 'Simultaneous Time-Shift and Record' digital set-top boxes."
