An Undercover Mission to Die For
By Net Detective
I walked into Rita Telko's office with hope and trepidation, the way IT managers look at network computers. When Rita called, it was usually for one of two reasons: She was ticked off at me or she wanted me to do a job that was too dangerous for the regular cybercops.
Sometimes, it was both. I stared at her across the desk. Rita was the world's most beautiful district attorney, but it wasn't the first thing you noticed about her. She had brains, courage and toughness. She took over a room like TCP/IP takes over your network, and she commanded it like an SNMP management station.
"What did I do this time, Rita?" I asked.
"Well, for starters, I got a guy in a holding cell who claims to be Novell president Joe Marengi. He's been roughed up. Did you do it?"
"I wanted to, but the stockholders got him first."
"OK. I got a vendor's sales rep who says you beat him up in the middle of a product presentation. What about that?"
"Self defense."

A smile crossed her face, then she started talking seriously. She said that Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft next week will make a major announcement that has to do with "simplifying enterprise computing." I wondered how Netscape Communications felt about that.
She told me that Cisco this week is briefing analysts on new directions for CiscoWorks Blue, its product suite for managing SNA in Cisco's router-based networks.
I listened intently. She told me that Macromedia is planning a new version of its Director software that will let users create their own Internet browser and customize it any way they like. She also told me that Microsoft is planning to release two versions of its Wolfpack clustering software-one for small users and a more scalable version that will help Microsoft compete with Unix.
There was a lilt in her voice as she said that NetIQ Corp. next week will announce the availability of NetIQ AppManager Suite, a comprehensive solution for centrally managing and monitoring distributed Windows NT systems and BackOffice applications.
She was telling me about Pac Bell's new ISDN ad campaignwhen she stopped short.
I knew she had a job for me to do.
