Re "red flag"--

Different companies are building different portions of the network. The backbone builders are different from the metro, and from the access providers. This is a classic "innovator's dilemma" situation, where the ILECs' traditional pricing structure is being turned over. With smarter software, there are opportunities to add revenues at various parts of the chain. The cafes can charge individuals for use, and also take advertising revenues for "screen space". More added services will allow a telco to aggregate voice and data and TV and wireless into one customer relationship. Etc. Yes, revenues will be lost in parts of the space (as we've seen with voice long distance), while new revenue possibilities arise for (possibly new) participants. And, yes, we are looking at deflation in the cost of communication--I hope.
