Why they did it was obvious. The wealthy elites that control the (R) party have been tooling their voters for decades, tossing them social bones for wealthy-friendly policies. In the process, they've adopted the racists, the tax haters, the 'patriots', the alien haters, the ammosexuals and every species of voting nut. Now, the nuts have taken over - the wealthy (R) elites no longer control the party. They can't field a plausible candidate like a McCain or a Romney - the nuts won't have it!
Trump, sensing this, has taken advantage. He's such an egotist, he probably really believes he'll win. His voters are SO desperate for a winner, they don't care about anything but winning, and believe him. What he's actually going to do is destroy the (R) party, in ONE election cycle!
