>> Trump changes stance on skilled-worker immigration during Detroit debate

That was amazing how quickly he completely changed course - a 180 degree shift on this from a populist position to a big-business position on this matter. Overnight.

He is a different sort of GOP candidate; one whose positions on matters are not closely held core beliefs. Personally, I think this is preferable in a political candidate. I'd take someone who is responsive over someone who an ideologue like Cruz any day.

But his initial explanation for the change was an amazing pile of bullshit. He said at first the reason for the change was so that our Harvard graduates et al could find work overseas when they get out of school. I was like, WTF? Was amazed nobody picked up on these statements. Who is he trying to appeal to?

Whether or not Trump is a racist himself seems quite secondary to the fact that he has been working so hard to appeal to racists. I cannot divine what any of Trump's "core" beliefs are. Its actually quite amazing to me to see someone like this winning on the Republican side. Usually, GOP candidates have a record to stand on and the electability of the candidate requires a litmus test of history supporting party-line positions on matters. Trump of couse has no actual voting record, and his spoken record has changed enormously on issues very important to the typical Republican platform.

The plurality of GOP voters are like putty in his hands. The GOP establishment seems so hated by their voters this cycle. They bought into a lot of lies and red meat, but got leaders who couldn't deliver. The story Trump is really selling is that he will be an effective fighter. What for? That is an act of faith. Trumps answer would be a non-answer: "success".
