I maintain my opinion that Core Vs Gap is not relevant when trying to overcome Nature - a futile excercise. We have the technology and the resources to prevent certain types of natural disturbances. For example, a large enough asteroid will hit earth one of these days and fall into the ocean causing huge tsunamis. This is not a what if scenario, but when. We have the technology to 1 deflect the asteroid (there 2 or three options) at relatively low cost using available current technology or 2. set up building codes and early warning systems to minimize the effects of the disaster. Naturally, however, we are not going to do anything about it until after the fact. We will then set up commissions after a few hundred thousand people die and then ask when what's his name (whoever is charge at the time) knew about the impending disaster and when did he know it? Instead we are spending some several hundred billion dollars killing each other. Makes a lot of sense.
