NOT as bad as headline looks for CPQ

Handheld June quarter sales lower

Shipments of handheld computing devices tumbled 21 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter as front-runner Palm Inc. gave up some market share, a survey released Monday shows.

Shipments of the personal digital assistants (PDAs) totalled 2.8 million in the quarter, down from 3.6 million in the first quarter, according to industry researcher Dataquest Inc.

Palm (PALM: news, chart, profile) led the worldwide market with a 32 percent share in the quarter, down from 50 percent share in the first quarter, Dataquest said. Compaq Computer (CPQ: news, chart, profile) followed with a 16 percent share in the quarter, up from an 8 percent share in the first quarter.

Compaq's gains were driven by greater growth in the corporate sales market, the researcher concludes.

Handspring (HAND: news, chart, profile) dipped to third place in the quarter with an 11 percent share, down from second place with a 16 percent share in the first.

Hewlett-Packard (HWP: news, chart, profile) rose to fourth with a 7 percent share, up from 4 percent in the first quarter; Canadian company Research in Motion (RIMM: news, chart, profile) slipped to fifth with a 4.1 percent share, down from 4.6 percent in the March quarter.

In the U.S., which represents just under half of all shipments, Palm and Handspring led in shipments of PDAs with 40 percent and 17 percent respectively. Compaq ranked third with a 16 percent share, according to Dataquest estimates.
