From EETimes June 21st - sounds positive. Following a slowdown in the IC wafer foundry business earlier this year, UMC has experienced a sudden - and surprising - surge in demand. Its current 6-in.- and 8-in.-wafer foundry capacity is fully booked for the remainder of this year, said Peter Chang, president of Hsinchu-based United Semiconductor Corp. (USC), in a recent interview. USC is a joint foundry venture between UMC, Alliance Semiconductor Corp., and S3 Inc. "These were supposed to be slow months," Chang said, "but we're overbooked now."
