With the Japanese economy the largest export economy in the world with it's major consumer market being that of the US it stands to reason that with a huge trade surplus the Japanese Yen has strengthened against the US dollar. This huge trade surplus is a signal of an economy that is coming out of it's reccessionary posture it has languished in over the past 5 years or so.
As noted the Nikkei enjoyed a 3% gain overnight based on statements the governments may expand their money supply in an effort to weaken the currency against other currencies. This would be done to prevent the increase in cost of product sold abroad and weaken the Yen against the greenback. This also leads to inflationary pressure at home and all the intracacies associated with expansion of ones money supply.
Buying Japan for a long term hold is best done via a mutual fund that knows the economy. If one wants to know how the fund can perform need only look at 1986 with the two predominant Canadian Funds AGF Japan and Investors Japan.During that period of a strong Yen against the greenback Canadian Investors enjoyed 60+% returns of which 30+% was performance and the balance was currency exchange gains due to the strong yen against both the US and Canadian dollar.
To gat a feel of how advanced their financial systems are I might point out that Japanese banks have hourly interest rate accounts where you can deposit your money,go do your laundry and pick up your money with interest on the way home.
