Sorry. I think ClarisWorks for Mac & Windows ($99) was the driving innovation here.

I think you are right about who made the innovation, but the product that made it was AppleWorks on the Apple //. It happened before Microsoft even had released its first copy of Word, when they will just another compiler company.
