SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov 14 (Reuters) - 3Com Corp. on Monday will unveil what it claims will be the fastest networking switch in the industry and a big boost in its rivalry with Cisco Systems Inc.

3Com said it will introduce the CoreBuilder 9000, a device that controls the flow of information among computers in a corporate setting. The new switch has up to four times the capacity of similar products from rivals, 3Com said.

Analysts said the device would fill a big hole in 3Com's product line. 3Com specializes in low-end networking gear such as modems and adapter cards for PCs. The CoreBuilder 9000 would help 3Com encroach on Cisco's speciality in high-end switches and routers.

"This is a very important product for 3Com," said Melinda LeBaron, networking analyst at market researcher Gartner Group Inc. "Cisco doesn't have a product for the enterprise to compete with this."

LeBaron said 3Com could use this switch as a centerpiece to sell other types networking gear to big customers.

A Cisco spokeswoman declined to comment.

In the past week, 3Com's stock slipped amid concerns about its slowing modem sales and a dimmer outlook in Asia, where it gets about 15 percent of its revenue.

3Com announced the new switch after the market closed. Its shares closed down 6.3 cents at $30.313 on Nasdaq trading of 18.2 million shares, the second-most active stock in U.S. markets.
