I disagree with you that doing something is better than waiting to see what is best to do.
Re: mass graves -- I am thinking of the horrific consequences for the survivors, of never knowing what happened to their family members. Not just emotional, but legal. Inheritance rights, insurance rights, property ownership rights, it's a nightmare that for some will never be untangled.
Re: getting on a plane to go there and help -- yes, very nice, but I think the plane ticket could have been donated to a nurse or a doctor or a sanitation specialist or a communications specialist.
Re: just sending money to somebody -- feel good bandage, been there, done that, but even "nice" charities take advantage of situations like this.
JMHO and not trying to rain on your parade. My sister, brother and brother-in-law are nurses -- I'd gladly buy them a plane ticket and donate a month's pay if their jobs would let them go. My husband is a specialist in water purification. Me, on the other hand, I'd be useless, eating food and drinking water that should be saved for someone who knows something useful. |
