Idaho Power rejects new coal power by 2013, says gas is better Associated Press - November 2, 2007 2:24 PM ET montanasnewsstation.com BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Idaho Power has become the latest utility to temper its enthusiasm for new coal-fired power plants. In an SEC filing, the state's largest utility says escalating costs, permit issues and greenhouse-gas-emission concerns led it to abandon plans to add 250 megawatts of coal-fired power to its system by 2013. The utility told the federal stock market regulator that it "determined that coal-fired generation is not the best technology to meet its resource needs." Instead, it plans to get the power from a new natural gas turbine - as well as wind and geothermal. Environmental groups praised Idaho Power's decision, saying it's a sign the utility is listening to customers who want green energy. Still, Idaho Power says it will continue to evaluate coal-fired options, including expanding a plant it owns in Wyoming and further investigation clean-coal technology like coal gasification.
