New York is a closed primary, where only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic Primary

It's the Republican primary and the Democratic primary. There is no American President primary. There is no Unaffiliated primary. If independents don't like the rules, they can form their own parties, or they can join an established party and change the rules.

Wait until they get here...

For the June 7, 2016, Presidential Primary Election the following parties notified the Secretary of State that they will allow No Party Preference voters to request their party’s presidential ballot:
