Motorola: MKM Ups Rating; Sees Lift From HTC, Apple Issues
By Eric Savitz

Motorola (MOT) stands to benefit from the both the bad PR for the Apple (AAPL) iPhone 4 over antenna issues and shortages of HTC phones at Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD), MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen asserts in a research note. He raised his rating on the stock this morning to Neutral from Sell, lifting his price to $7, from $5.

“We believe HTC’s supply stumbles at Verizon and Apple’s reported iPhone 4 trouble are likely to give the Droid X launch an extra boost this month,” he writes. “The HTC Incredible’s supply problems have likely extended the longevity of the Motorola Droid.”

He adds that the iPhone antenna issues are not likely to soften sales to loyal fans, but that “it is likely to push fence-sitters already worrying about AT&T quality into the Droid camp.”

MOT is up 25 cents, or 3.5%, to $7.46.
