China is a net exporter of oil and people (students and illegals), and the occasional rocket parts to offset US to Taiwan transfers. The imports are US treasuries, US food, US Boeing, US satellites, US atomic secrets by way of Taiwan intelligence agency, Euro airbuses, South African platinum (1 million ounces out of 3.9 million produced worldwide, with Japan taking another million, and Russians making up the resulting shortfall out of their already severely diminished inventory), Russian weapons platforms married to Isreali avionics, and of course tourists.
There are some in US Congress who wants to stop the satellite sales, not chase up on the route of atomic secrets theft, and cut of the capital market to Chinese firms. In so doing, these folks are ready to accept instead a sell-down of US treasuries, the return of US educated Chinese scientists newly fired from the governmment/commercial labs and soon to be layed off in Silicon Valley, in exchange for more illegals that would result should China open its borders.
When Reagen sent in the Marines to Panama, enough Chinese waiting to enter the US got stuck to now constitute 8-10% of Panama's current population.
It is a messy connected world we live in and all in such a small and single sailboat. |
