Shorts are not doing all that great like you think. When a stock 'adjusts' and moves up 15 or 20 off its lows the shorter is at odds and does not know what to do. You are assuming that they are casually holding short positions through 100 point rallies and 10% moves up. They are covering, causing more rallying, others are shorting and there is a bottleneck. I also think that 'longs' like myself short when they get profits. I really think its the swing trader that is making the most out of this market, both long and short. I held a handful of shorts for 3 days and did well but I also shorted intraday and did not too shabbily either. Buy stops, sell stops and stop limits are still the best insurance for volatile markets. Who really earned the most? The brokerages, the commissions were hundreds of dollars a day, but so be it.
